FFS EST. 1948
The Fountain Area Fire Department has a rich history dating back to its official organization in 1948 under Chief Wally Blohm. Early operations relied on basic equipment, including ladders, buckets, and axes, with significant upgrades beginning in 1925 when the Ajax Fire Engine was purchased. By 1947, the department expanded fire protection to rural areas through a partnership with Sherman Township, leading to the construction of the first fire hall in 1948, which also housed village equipment. Over the years, the department consistently modernized, adding a Dodge Attack Pumper in 1977 to meet the growing needs of the community.
In 1990, the department acquired its first medical unit, thanks to grants and community fundraising efforts. This addition significantly improved emergency response capabilities, marking the start of a new era for Fountain Area Fire Department. In 1987, the department introduced its first AED and trained its initial EMTs, underscoring its commitment to medical emergencies. The old fire station, built in 1948, was replaced after community-backed efforts in the late 1980s to address space constraints and accessibility issues.
Beyond firefighting, the department has played an integral role in the community. From sponsoring youth sports and organizing fire prevention programs to participating in state fire conferences and hosting holiday gatherings, its contributions extend far beyond emergency services. Notably, the department continues to honor Trooper Paul Butterfield's memory with an annual memorial and remains a steadfast ambassador for public safety and community well-being.
