GFS EST. 1977
The Grant Township Fire Department began with a simple idea over coffee in 1977, when firefighter Jimmy White suggested starting a department to serve the township. Planning soon followed, and a meeting at the old LaSalle School confirmed strong community interest. By September 1978, the department became operational, responding to its first call—a trailer fire at Lot #1 in Driftwood Village—even as the fire station was still under construction.
In its early days, the department relied on modest resources, including a 1966 converted gasoline tanker and a used 1976 Dodge Power Wagon Mini Pumper. Calls were dispatched through seven Plextron Receivers and a telephone tree, with the support of dedicated volunteers and their families.
Over time, membership evolved, and equipment improved thanks to the establishment of the Rural Fire Authority. Today, the department is equipped with modern tools and resources to provide reliable, effective service to Grant Township residents, continuing its proud tradition of community support and emergency response.
