RFS EST. 1974
Riverton Fire Department started out in 1949 with local farmers using tractors and sprayers to fight fires. They officially formed in 1974, thru the efforts of Riverton Township Board members and Mason County Board members.
In 1978, Riverton proudly received its first new truck, a Pierce mini pumper. Though smaller than other nearby pumper trucks, the firefighters learned to maximize its potential and rely on it for years. By the late 90s, the department expanded its services, responding to medical calls as firefighters trained to become First Responders and EMTs.
The year 1998 marked the arrival of Riverton's first Class A pumper. This milestone ushered in a new era of 20-25 year rotations for their trucks. Over the years, many dedicated men and women have served in the department, with over half a dozen moving on to become full-time firefighters in big cities.
Fire calls in the 1970s averaged around 40 per year. Today, Riverton handles around 200 calls annually. With an average roster of 18-20 firefighters, they commit 80-100 hours each year to rigorous training, ensuring their skills remain sharp and effective.
Riverton's firefighters are resourceful, frequently applying for grants to support their operations. They also host a large pancake breakfast each year, drawing over 500 attendees, a cherished community tradition that reinforces their bond with the residents they serve.
