SFS EST. 1898
Scottville’s first formally organized Fire Department was established in 1898, consisting of 20 volunteers. Before 1900, a hand-drawn hose cart was used for fire response. After 1900, horses pulled a fire wagon to the scene. There is no record of when Scottville’s first fire engine entered service. The department was originally housed next to the current City Hall, with the visible garage door serving as the entry and exit for equipment.
By the late 1970s, the size of fire apparatus outgrew the station’s door. Through a collective effort by fire personnel, citizens, and local business owners, a new fire station was completed in the early 1980s. In 1995, Scottville Fire Department became part of the Mason County Rural Fire Authority.
Located a block off Main Street on Broadway, the current station houses four emergency response vehicles and includes a meeting room and offices. It is home to 13 paid on-call First Responders. The Scottville Station provides coverage to the City of Scottville, as well as Amber and Victory Townships. Its call volume consistently ranks higher than any of the other stations.
